  Proposed Michigan Wake Boat Laws 2026
As of early 2026, Michigan is considering new, stricter regulations for wake boats under Senate Bill 812 (introduced Feb. 6, 2026), aimed at reducing shoreline erosion and damage from large wakes. The proposed law requires boats in “wake sport mode” to operate in at least 20 feet of water and remain 500 feet from shorelines, docks, and other vessels.
Key Aspects of Proposed 2026 Legislation (SB 812)
·      Definition: Defines “wake boat”, “wake-enhancing equipment”, and “wake sport mode” (using ballast tanks/devices to create larger wakes).
·      Distance Restriction: Vessels in wake sport mode must maintain at least 500 feet from shorelines, docks, rafts, and anchored boats.
·      Depth Restriction: Operation in wake sport mode is restricted to water at least 20 feet deep.
·      Violations: Violations are considered a civil infraction with potential fines up to $500.
·      Status: The bill has referred to the Senate Committee on Natural Resources and Agriculture on Feb. 26, 2026.
Existing Michigan Regulations
·      General “No Wake” Rule: Under existing law, vessels must operate at “no wake” speed within 100 feet of the shoreline, docks, rafts, or anchored boats, especially in shallow areas (less than 3 feet deep.)
·      DNR Recommendations: The Michigan DNR already recommends that wake vessels stay 500 feet from shore and operate in water at least 15 feet deep to protect lakes.
